Harming with Speech and Actions

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said:

“A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue or his hands.  And a Muhajir (an emigrant) is the one who gives up (abandons) all what Allah has forbidden.”

Showing Off

Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him):

The thing I fear for you the most is shirk al-asghar.

When he was asked what it is, he replied:

It is ar-riyaa (showing off).

Character and Speech

It is reported that Abû Hurayrah (may Allâh be pleased with him) used to say:

Whoever does not think that his speech is part of his deeds and that his character is part of his religion will be destroyed without even realizing.

Excessive Questioning

Reported ‘Amr ibn Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), that Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said:

The Muslims who have committed the greatest offence against Muslims are those who asked about things which were not prohibited, but which became prohibited because of their questions.

Sudden Glance

Jarir bin ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

I asked Allah’s Messenger Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) about the sudden glance (that is cast) on the face (of a non-Mahram*).  He commanded me that I should turn away my eyes.

*Mahram – someone you are prohibited to marry, e.g. uncle or aunt, father or mother etc.  Non-Mahram would be someone whom you could marry.

From the Etiquette of a Son with his Father

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) once saw two men.  He asked one of them, “How is this man related to you?”  He replied, “He is my father.”  Abu Hurayrah said:

 “Do not call him by his name, do not walk in front of him and do not sit before he does.”

Ignorant and Indecent Speech

Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said:

“Fasting is not merely abstaining from eating and drinking.  Rather, it is also abstaining from ignorant and indecent speech. So if anyone abuses or behaves ignorantly with you, then say:  I am fasting, I am fasting.”

[Sahih: Related by Ibn Khuzaymah (no.1996) and aI-Hakim (1/430) who authenticated it. Refer to Sahihut-Targhib (no.1075).]

Fasting and Good Manners

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said:

“Whosoever does not abandon falsehood in speech and action, then Allah the Mighty and Majestic has no need that he should leave his food and drink.”

Laugh Little

“If you knew that which I know you would laugh little and weep much.”

Keeping Secrets Secret

Narrated Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) confided to me a secret which I did not disclose to anybody after him.  And Um Sulaim (may Allah be pleased with her) asked me (about that secret) but I did not tell her.
