Numerous Ways of Charity

June 3, 2012 Leave a comment

Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said:

“Giving in charity is an obligation upon every Muslim”. It was said (to him): “What about one who does not find (the means) to do so?”  He (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said, “Let him work with his hands, thus doing benefit to himself and give in charity.”  It was said to him: “What if he does not have (the means) to do so?”  He (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said, “Then let him assist the needy, the aggrieved.”  It was said: “What about if he cannot even do this?”  He (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said, “Then he should enjoin good.”  He was asked: “What if he cannot do that?”  He (the Prophet; may Allah’s peace be upon him) said, “He should then abstain from evil, for verily, that is a charity from him”.

Prophet of Allah, Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said:

Look at those below you and not those above you.  It is better for you, so that you do not deny Allah’s blessings on you.

[Bukhari and Muslim; as quoted in: ‘The Fundamentals of Tawheed,’ by Dr. Bilal Philips]

Narrated Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said:

“No one will enter Paradise who has even a mustard-seed’s weight of arrogance in his heart, and no one will enter Hell who has even a mustard-seed’s weight of faith in his heart.”

On Returning from a Journey

January 23, 2012 Leave a comment

It is recommended to gather ones friends and to feed them on returning from a journey, as the Prophet (may Allah’s peace be upon him) used to do.

Jaabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) related that:

Whenever the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace be upon him) returned to al-Madeenah he sacrificed a camel or a cow.
[Muslim]

This food which is presented after a journey is known as al-Naqee’ah.  This hadeeth shows that feeding the Imaam, the leader or ones friends upon returning from a journey was a recommended act with the salaf [companions of the Prophet and early generations].

Wasting Food

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace be upon him) commanded the licking of fingers and the gleaning of the dish, saying:

“You do not know in which portion the blessing lies.”

[Muslim]

Commentary from Riyad-us-Saliheen:  This Hadith underlines the wisdom behind licking the fingers and the vessel.  The eater never knows whether a blessing underlies what has been eaten by him, or the particles sticking to his fingers and vessels contain it.  Those particles, therefore, should not be wasted; they should be made part of food by being licked.  They may be invested with a blessing and proved more useful for the eater’s health and strength.  Moreover, by this way he escapes disregarding the Bounty of Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) said:

“Travel is a piece of punishment as it deprives you of food, drink, and sleep.  So when you complete your needs you should hurry back to your family.”

Aboo Sa’eed (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

We were with the Prophet (may Allah’s peace be upon him) on a journey and he said:

“He who has an extra mount should give it to somebody who has none.  He who has extra provisions should give it to somebody who has none.”

Then he (may Allah’s peace be upon him) began to mention various kinds of possessions until we began to think that no one had a right to anything extra.

Equity Among Children

Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with them) reported:

My father took me to Allah’s Messenger Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him) and said:

Allah’s Messenger, bear witness that I have given such and such gift to Nu’man from my property, whereupon the (the Holy Prophet) said:

Have you conferred upon all of your sons as you have conferred upon Nu’man? He said: No. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Call someone else besides me as a witness. And he further said: Would it, please you that they (your children) should all behave virtuously towards you? He said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Then don’t do that (i e. don’t give gift to one to the exclusion of others).
